I saw a capibara pass by this year and i thought: i make a passport portrait of him, as a nod to this sometimes complicated world.
In 2024, I saw a docufilm: The Wild North Sea.
Puffins everywhere.
But everywhere they were doing badly. They had no food.
Danger lurked everywhere. This wasn’t “nature.”
“Humans had interfered, in the food chain, in their habitat.
Overfishing forced all life into an unnatural struggle.”
There is a place in this world where pigs swim near a desert island. That place in the Caribbean, a place where people like to visit and enjoy this special freedom. But, is this reality really so special? In our home world we face suffering with our eyes closed. We accept so-called cheerful images on the screens of locked-up sadness. Is there really no one who sees the story behind the Hema sausage? I have been working on this painting intermittently since September. Last year the pig was put in the spotlight even more. More and more people go through their days without blinders and see! The Netherlands is the slaughterhouse of Europe, without any denial. The times we live in can no longer withstand this. The world in which our children grow up with Peppa Pig and trucks with closed hatches.
Duck slaughterhouses where the windows are so high because we don’t want to see. We make everything happen. These nonsensical practices that create so much that functioning and remaining positive for the future really seems like a more difficult jigsaw puzzle every day.
If there is one thing that the Dutch are growing up with, it is a fair share of lies about the food industry.
It’s wrong, very wrong! It’s time for the curtains to open, the windows to reach the street and the sadness to reach everyone. That parents stop lying and get to work.
By becoming kind to the world they will soon leave their children in.
I painted him on a layer of newspapers, because he is topical. The inspiration for this portrait is sad but reality. Since we know, in 2019, more than 100 walruses fall from metered-high cliffs due global warming.
I thought it was heartbreaking to see dozens of walruses crashing down from high cliffs. They are forced to scramble further on land, now that they can barely find enough ice to rest.
I painted it on a layer of newspaper,
because it’s relevant… the young dog symbolizes the puppies
we love so much.

The wolf once lived in almost all of Europe.
The wolf has also traditionally lived in the Netherlands and
was part of our nature. Due to centuries of intensive persecution by humans,
the animal was completely exterminated.
Legal protection since 1982 has gradually brought about a turnaround.
Now the wolf has returned to the Netherlands on its own.
This amazing docufilm inspired me to make a portrait of this beautiful creature. Following the octopus farm that was to be opened last year, on the Canary Islands. A portrait of this intelligent animal, sitting on the shell of the nautilus, which was his support. To build a home How important it is to live together with respect for each other. The octopus was in the news a few years ago. We started researching and found more than we already knew: The intelligence of this animal and how old this species is. I want to show this through its (former) ‘home’. In this painting, that is the nautilus shell. The shrimp is there to show how important friendship is in life.
Easter isn’t so cheerful!

When you realize that baby chickens are dying on the
egg belt for the egg that you then cheerfully paint.
I think the original “Easter idea” must have been different in the beginning.
The early bird catches the worm.
The spontaneity of a rooster. The living alarm clock; it’s a beautiful day!
The inspiration for this portrait was a rooster named “Croky,” in our house where we
were looking after him in Zeeland.
When the bathroom door was open, the cheeky little rooster would sit in the window sill,
crowing.
In the garden, he would run after us and leave his spurs in our heels.
Ilja found him exciting and didn’t trust him.
By giving him a name, we were able to build a kind of bond with him and
try to understand his reaction.
We discovered that he wanted to protect his females.
And that protecting what you love is a natural instinct in every being.
Satao was an African elephant
who lived in Tsavo National Park in kenya. He was thought to have been born during the late 60s.
He was estimated to be one of the most giant elephants in the world at the time of his
death and has been described as one of kenya’s most iconic and well-known tuskers.
Motherland is the earth, the mother is strong, pushing her calf forward towards the world. Teach him, keep him from fear. Love and let go teach him what she once learned from her mother; to discover the unknown for yourself. But in this uncertain future today, we have to file early before we can discover. This world has changed. Mother Earth will strike back, but now she is being put to the test. There is too much going on in this crazy world, and for what?

The attention of the toucan is drawn by these travelers.
You have to be on your guard or you will be imprisoned for what locals believe in.
That is why these oxpeckers travel on the back of the giraffes. They make an alarming noise when people are close by. The giraffes understand this warning and can therefore flee from the potential danger in time.
‘Heaven, I’m in heaven’ The black barn owl lives primarily on the other side of the world, in the rainforests. In contrast, the barn owl we know is known for its shelter in buildings like churches.

When he died, i painted him back home, the northpole. Lying on an ice floe with one leg in the water,
will tell that the ice is melting. The earth is warming at a rapid pace andthere will be no place left to run. Knut is in heaven and heaven is home.

The Netherlands hopes for more with the arrival of two giant pandas to get visitors to the zoo. It inspired me to paint a portrait of a sitting panda on a piece of bamboo, which symbolically forms the bridge between China and the Netherlands. The Chinese butterfly comes to visit the panda on the way.

The hybride macaw is a mix between the yellow wing macaw and Blue macaw. Because this species does not officially recognize and get mixed by natural love of the secondary colors, they’re just like people corresponding similarities; The acceptance of existance!

Getting tired of war – People stop wasting time and start enjoying!

The baboons were not allowed to vote, so they remained relaxed. The only had their own view of who became the boss of the family.

A tiger in a zoo. How do we come up with it?
Our domestic cat akin to the felines sees us, man not as a god but as a staff.
They are intelligent and we humans only know half of what they are doing every day. As for the tiger,
The tiger does not think about humans at all.
Its image is powerful, the tiger is an animal in its own wilderness.
In captivity, sitting here like a house cat on the concrete floor, the tiger no longer knows who he is.
I hope one day, people will understand that a losing wildlife is onacceptable.

Dare to (continue to) stand up for yourself
This is a portrait of a Zeeland seal. The whiting is a fish species native to Zeeland. The title of this painting represents the reproach of humans for the entertainment and misplaced enjoyment of animals that have to perform tricks and then receive a fish as a reward. In this painting, the seal simply lives in the North Sea and is having a party. His garlands consist of fish (whiting) on a cord. You could think of it as a herring party. – The title of this painting represents: reproaching man for the entertainment and misplaced enjoyment of animals that have to perform tricks and then receive a fish as a reward. It used to be a party, normal. The whiting streamer! Far from the Whiting: overfishing ensures that ’they’ can no longer access it.

Sharing the universe
I decided it was time to place her in the universe. Symbolizing for all the animals in the bio industry and especially for her family who are lived for the UGG shoes.
-She is not alone in the darkness. The universe surrounds her and a stray jackdaw lands on her shoulder.
This is a portrait of ‘Hermien’, The cow that escaped death together with her sister at the end of last year. ‘Death’ in the translation of ‘slaughter’. After weeks of fearfully wandering in the woods, she was finally reunited with her sister and lived the rest of her life in freedom. -No animal wants to die, because you don’t want to die either, do you?! We have no right to make a choice for someone else. Love your neighbor and especially when it comes to animals; they only give love and think of you in the ‘worst case’.

The lights are of. Everybody is gone! How alone can you be? Left behind, not trampled full of antibiotic filled world creature. What does human do to you and for that? Free range does not exist! It is only a French balcony.’ The white butterfly brings hope, a bright spot, something the rooster has never seen. You never see the roosters! They disappear when they are not yet an age. This happens behind the scenes. Because their existence is so short, it inspired me to symbolically paint a portrait with a small detail in the darkness. The rooster stands on an unhatched egg, which turns into a magic ball. And once you enchant something, you can be anywhere.
‘Drops of an unending Java dream’
I saw a documentary about this beautiful creature and was so fascinated about the silence in his voice, I had to portray him. The sea is such a beautiful place, we don’t know enough about it.
‘Babywhale Colin’ (Colette), lost it’s mother and came in pittwater, Sydney Australia. After days of media exposure and no solutions on how to save baby Colin, the whale adopted a sailing boat as it’s mum. She was lost in one of Australia’s most beautiful bays ‘The Basin’ in pittwater, in the heart of ku-ring-gai National park. The authorities had no answers. They decided to put baby whale ‘Colette’ to sleep… *In this painting is Colin reunited with her mother. This story inspired me, so i wanted to make a portrait in wich Colin was reunited with his mother. Forever, immortalized in a frozen moment! (Later on close inspection they found out Colin was a female and that’s how her name changed in ‘Colette’.)

One day, I had this beautiful rabbit at home. Edgar was always afraid. The fear was in him. As if he had been hunted. He came from a pet shop and luckily these days, rabbits are now sold in pairs. After all, they are group animals. One day, when Ola, my other rabbit, died, we released Edgar onto the heath.
